The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that the upcoming governorship election on November 11 in Imo State would not take place in 38 polling units.
According to The PUNCH, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Sylvia Agu, made this revelation during a press conference in Owerri, citing the absence of voter registration in these 38 polling units as the reason.
The REC also provided information that 2,318,919 individuals had already obtained their Permanent Voter Cards , and 101,003 individuals were yet to collect their PVCs in preparation for the election.
She said, “The number of collected PVCs is 2,318,919, while uncollected PVCs stand at 101,003. The polling units where elections won’t take place are 38. These are places with zero registration numbers. Election will be held in 4,720 polling units. The total number of polling units is 4,758.
“Our workforce for the election revolves around 21,000 staff. We are ready for this election. It is an off-cycle election, the very first one in the history of Imo State and we are very prepared for it.
“Election will start at 8.30 am and stop at 2.30 pm. We will collate results electronically.”
She explained that among the 13 programs scheduled by the commission for the election, INEC had successfully completed 11, with only two remaining tasks on its agenda. These two pending items are the final day for political parties and their candidates to campaign, set for November 9, and the actual election day scheduled for November 11.
