The All Progressives Congress in Enugu State has launched a campaign to secure the release of Bright Ngene, the Labour Party candidate for Enugu South Urban State constituency, from detention.
Ngene, who won the 2023 general election, was recently convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison for alleged financial misconduct.
The APC claims that the conviction was politically motivated and aimed at paving the way for the ruling People’s Democratic Party candidate in the upcoming rerun election, according to TheNation.
APC Chairman, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, described Ngene’s imprisonment as a “miscarriage of justice” and demanded his immediate release.
Agballah alleged that the PDP used its influence to manipulate the judicial system and secure Ngene’s conviction.
The rerun election, ordered by the Appeal tribunal due to reports of manipulation and violence, has been stalled twice.
The APC claims that the PDP is trying to exploit the situation to its advantage.
The PDP has denied any involvement in Ngene’s conviction, stating that the investigation and trial were initiated by a complaint from his community.
The situation has sparked tensions in the state, with the APC and LP calling for Ngene’s release and the PDP maintaining that the law should take its course.
