A former deputy speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olumuyiwa Jimoh, has called on anti-graft agencies to investigate the former Speaker, Mudasiru Obasa, following his impeachment over allegations of misconduct.
Recall that Obasa was removed from his position on January 13, 2025, by members of the House due to allegations of misconduct and other offences.
In the aftermath, Mojisola Meranda, his former deputy, was elected as the new Speaker, becoming the first woman to hold the position in Lagos State.
In response to Obasa’s statement that he remains the Speaker until the impeachment process is properly completed, Jimoh described Obasa as frustrated and suggested he should be suspended.
He noted that the constitution clearly outlines the impeachment process, and Obasa’s claim was irrelevant, as he no longer held office.
Jimoh further explained that Obasa’s removal did not require his physical presence in the House, citing constitutional provisions to back his stance.
Jimoh also reflected on his own removal as deputy majority leader, which he claimed was orchestrated by Obasa. He expressed dissatisfaction with the process, stating that he was not informed about his removal and was pressured into accepting it. Jimoh explained that his removal was due to his opposition to some of Obasa’s policies, which he deemed undemocratic and contrary to due process. Despite this, Jimoh stated that he accepted the situation without contest.
“He said, “He (Obasa) claims that he is still the speaker which I think he knows that the implication is automatic suspension. I feel he should be suspended for that.
“He (Obasa) doesn’t need to be in the House to be impeached. It is stipulated in the constitution: section 92 sub-section 2 states it clearly.”
““I was not happy that he removed me. I was not notified about the process of my removal. I didn’t contend it because he coerced and intimidated members to sign for my removal. I took it in good fate,” Jimoh said.
On the reason for his removal, Jimoh said it was “because I do challenge him on some of his policies that were anti-democratic and anti-due process.”
