A crucial meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities is underway to address the lingering crisis in the university system and prevent a potential strike.
The closed-door meeting, held at the Federal Ministry of Education, aims to resolve outstanding issues affecting the universities.
Led by Education Minister, Professor Tahir Mamman, the government delegation includes Minister of State for Education Dr. Yusuf Sununu and other top officials.
ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke, heading the union’s delegation, expressed hope that the meeting would lead to a resolution of the outstanding issues, averting the need for industrial action, according to Daily Nigerian.
“There are a lot of issues that are outstanding within the system and we believe that before now, they would have been taken care of.
‘The issues would have been resolved in line with the promise made by President Bola Tinubu and there will not be strike in the university system.
“We hope that this meeting will be able to resolve some of these issues so that we can move forward as a country as well as our university system,” he said.
The union has issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to address their demands, threatening a nationwide strike if they are not met.
The meeting’s outcome may determine the fate of the university system, as both parties work towards a mutually beneficial solution.
