The Federal Government has called for an emergency meeting on Wednesday to address the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1, 2024.
The meeting, set for 10 a.m. today at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Conference Room, aims to discuss the grievances driving the protest, according to Politics Nigeria.
Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had urged Nigerians to halt the protest, requesting more time to implement people-centered programs.
However, citizens are frustrated with the country’s economic crisis, marked by soaring inflation rates of 34.19% for core inflation and 40.87% for food inflation.
Despite the recent approval of a new minimum wage of N70,000, many Nigerians feel it is insufficient to address the widespread hardship.
The planned protest draws inspiration from a similar movement in Kenya, where demonstrators successfully pressured their government to revisit contentious policies.
The emergency meeting comes as the government seeks to address the growing discontent and find solutions to the country’s economic challenges.
