The Nigerian Senate has called on President Bola Tinubu to initiate immediate dredging of Rivers Niger and Benue.
This measure aims to prevent flooding and mitigate its devastating effects.
The resolution was passed following a motion by Senator Amos Yohanna, highlighting the humanitarian crisis caused by flooding in Adamawa North Senatorial District, according to Channels TV.
The district’s five local governments – Madagali, Maiha, Michika, Mubi North, and Mubi South – suffered catastrophic destruction, with hundreds of houses and farmlands ruined.
This development comes after the recent severe flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State, described as the city’s worst in 30 years by the United Nations refugee agency. Emergency officials fear the situation may worsen.
The Senate had previously resolved to include river dredging projects in the 2024 Appropriation Bill to combat recurring flooding. Lawmakers now push for inclusion in the 2025 budget.
In addition to dredging, the Senate directed the National Emergency Management Agency to provide urgent relief materials to affected communities.
The government’s prompt action is crucial in alleviating the suffering of flood victims and preventing future disasters.
