Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State paid an unexpected visit to the State Assembly residential quarters on Aba Road on Thursday, amidst calls from the All Progressives Congress and the Local Government Areas on the State House of Assembly to impeach him.
There were fears that the assembly might be gearing up to initiate the impeachment process against the governor at any time.
On Wednesday, four members of the State House of Assembly loyal to Fubara elected Victor Oko Jumbo as its new Speaker following the resignation of Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie.
Governor Fubara, aware of the renewed political tension in the state, made a brief stopover at the assembly residential quarters unexpectedly.
During his visit, the governor did not engage with anyone but rather took a stroll around the facility before proceeding to monitor an ongoing project around Obiri-Ikwerre.
Earlier reports indicated that the state government had begun efforts to renovate the state assembly complex, causing panic among lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.
While the purpose of the governor’s visit to the assembly facility has not been confirmed, a source in the state government House mentioned that the governor intends to commence the renovation of the facility to improve its appearance.
