Supporters of the People’s Democratic Party, believed to be loyalists of the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, clashed at the PDP Secretariat in Port Harcourt on Friday.
The incident led to shootings around the Secretariat located on the Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway.
While some sources claimed that the gunshots were fired by security operatives stationed to guard the facility following the court-ordered removal of the Aaron Chukwuemeka-led executives of the party, others alleged that political thugs were responsible for the shooting.
Reports indicated that supporters of the state governor, who had been evicted from the office by security personnel after the court ruling, attempted to reclaim the office on Friday morning. However, another group, said to be loyalists of the former governor, arrived at the scene, leading to a violent confrontation. The clash at the Secretariat resulted in several gunshots, escalating tensions in the area.
The situation remains tense as both factions continue to assert their influence over the party’s affairs in Rivers State.
