Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has initiated legal proceedings against former Rivers State Head of Service, George Nwaeke, following accusations of arson and defamation.
Ehie categorically denied any involvement in the October 30, 2023, burning of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he described Nwaeke’s allegations as unfounded and defamatory, asserting that he had no prior knowledge of the arson incident.
“It is very important to clarify that I was not, I had no hand, and was not part of the burning down of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” Ehie stated emphatically.
He disclosed that he had directed his legal representatives to initiate criminal libel proceedings against Nwaeke, challenging him to provide evidence supporting his accusations.
“I will not join issues completely with Mr. George Nwaeke because I have already instructed my lawyers to file an issue of criminal libel against him, and I hope he is very prepared to substantiate his claims and his allegations,” Ehie declared.
Nwaeke had alleged that both Governor Fubara and Ehie were behind the fire that destroyed the state assembly complex amidst a tense political situation. These accusations have stirred significant controversy within the Rivers State political sphere.
