Members of the Rivers House of Assembly who are loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara have impeached the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, and his deputy, Dumle Maol.
The lawmakers, numbering about eight, reportedly sat in one of the buildings at the Government House, Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Aside from impeaching the speaker and his deputy, the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Samuel Amadi, was also suspended.
The lawmakers also directed the governor to appoint an Acting Chief Judge for the state.
In a statement issued after the impeachment, the lawmakers said they had elected Hon. Edison Ehie, the impeached Leader of the House, as the new speaker.
Meanwhile, Fubara has congratulated Ehie on his emergence as the new speaker of the House.
