The Gombe State House of Assembly has passed a landmark bill to establish a state disability commission aimed at safeguarding the rights of people with disabilities and promoting their full participation and equal opportunities.
The bill, sponsored by a state lawmaker, Shuaibu Haruna, was approved following the adoption of a detailed report from the House Committee on Women Affairs, Social Development, Special Duties, and Inter-Governmental Affairs.
Chairman of the committee and representative of Kaltungo West, Gabriel Galadima Fushison, highlighted that the bill was a private member’s initiative.
He noted that it was thoroughly reviewed to ensure it aligns with the needs of Gombe State residents. The committee acted swiftly upon receiving the bill, conducting a public hearing and soliciting feedback from key stakeholders.
These included the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner of Police, civil society groups, and professional bodies such as the Nigerian Bar Association, the International Federation of Women Lawyers, and the Nigerian Union of Journalists.
Haruna, the bill’s sponsor, emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive society where all citizens, including those with disabilities, can participate meaningfully in governance and have equal opportunities.
He stressed that the commission would help ensure PWDs have the right to vote and be voted for during elections.
The passage of the bill marks a significant step towards progressive and inclusive governance in Gombe State, reflecting the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of all citizens.
