Tragedy struck in Ogun State on Saturday afternoon when suspected gunmen killed the All Progressives Congress councilorship candidate for Ward 15 in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Adeyinka Adeleke.
The assailants arrived in a tinted vehicle, opening fire and causing chaos as residents fled the area. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with shops being hastily closed and residents scrambling for safety.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen shot Adeleke multiple times before smashing his head with stones to ensure his death.
One source revealed, “The gunmen came in a tinted car, shot him, and hit him with stones until he died. There was tension in the area as people were scampering for safety”.
Another source described the incident, saying, “One of the assailants stepped out of the car, shot Adeyinka at close range, and then used stones to strike him until he was lifeless”.
Adeyinka Adeleke was not only a councilorship candidate but also a transport union worker in the Panseke area of Abeokuta.
The incident occurred around 2 pm, catching everyone off guard, and authorities are still unsure if it was a cultist attack.
A source stated, “The Killing happened around 2 pm, it took everybody by surprise… No one knows if it is a cultist attack or not. The people in the area are already locking their shops, everywhere is tensed up now, it is so sad”.
A senior police officer in the area confirmed the incident, stating that the family took the corpse away.
The police source said, “Yes, the incident happened. His family decided to take his body for burial”.
However, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, was yet to respond to messages sent to her line as of the time of filing this report.
