The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has called on the Federal Government to address the hardships faced by Nigerians due to the removal of fuel subsidy and the increase in electricity tariffs.
Speaking at the 2024 edition of the Oke Ibadan festival organized by the Olokun Festival Foundation in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Adams emphasized the need for urgent action to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
He commended the idea of states having independent power supply, which he initially applauded as one of the policies of the current administration. Adams highlighted the numerous advantages states could derive from this initiative.
Adams stated, “Nigerians have continued to raise their voices against the policy, even as power outages persist in the country. The new tariffs have become a big problem for Nigerians. The increase in electricity tariffs has taken a huge toll on the entire system, affecting all sectors of the Nigerian economy.”
He also addressed the impact of the fuel subsidy removal, stating, “Like the growing pain experienced through the hike in electricity tariffs, the fuel subsidy removal has continued to bring more hardship to Nigerians. It has also affected the Nigerian economy, leading to further inflation.”
Expressing his ongoing support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Adams congratulated the President on his recent victory at the Supreme Court.
Adams conveyed in a congratulatory letter to the President, “Nigeria is going through a lot at the moment. Your victory has given rise to a leadership that this time demands. And we must agree with the fact that this is truly a new chapter in the political trajectory of Nigeria.”
However, he urged President Tinubu to prioritize the widespread yearning for the restructuring of the country during his presidency.
