The United States Embassy has formally received and accepted a petition made by the Human Rights Writers Association against the Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi.
According to Leadership, the governor was the target of the petitioner’s request for a visa prohibition due to what it called his “barbaric use of the Ebubeagu militia to commit crimes against humanity.”
They asked other foreign embassies to firmly forbid Umahi or members of his family from traveling outside of Nigeria.
HURIWA, which had earlier spoken at a global press conference, had declared that it will continue its campaign against the governor until he stopped intimidating residents with the help of the private police.
The organisation detailed the alleged nefarious actions of the state security network and its many attacks on opposition leaders in a five-page letter signed by HURIWA’s country director, Amina Mohammed.
Additionally, it urged the nation’s security to focus on Governor Umahi’s suspected cooperation with a local security group to attack rivals and emphasized the necessity to dissolve the group.
In related news, the former Commissioner of Police in the State, Aliyu Garba, referred to in the suit, has since been transferred outside of Ebonyi State. There is now a new police commissioner in charge. One of the petitioners’ requests was for Garba’s removal.
