Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended his congratulations to Donald Trump on his recent election victory, praising the President-elect as “courageous” and expressing his readiness for discussions.
Putin’s commendation comes after observing Trump’s resilience during an assassination attempt earlier this year, an incident the Russian leader admired as a show of character.
Putin shared his remarks at the Valdai Discussion Club in Sochi, saying, “I take this opportunity to congratulate him,” while describing Trump’s reaction to the incident as that of a person who “handled himself like a man.”
Since his surprising election win, Trump has reportedly been in contact with around 70 world leaders, though he has yet to speak directly with Putin. When asked by NBC about the potential for a conversation with the Russian leader, Trump replied, “I think we’ll speak.”
Putin emphasized his openness to dialogue with the incoming U.S. president, signaling what could be a new chapter in U.S.-Russia relations as Trump prepares to assume office.
