The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25 elections, Peter Obi, has claimed that majority of the votes he polled in Lagos state were from indigenes.
Obi said this while fielding questions on Arise TV on Monday morning.
The former Anambra State Governor said people who voted for him did not do so on the basis of ethnicity, insisting that the electorates knew and trusted in his stand.
He added that, he even got more votes from Lagos indigenes than those who can be referred to as “visitors.”
He said, “In the South-East, it is a similar situation, people know me, people know what I stand for, people know I have kept my promises. People know I’ve kept to what I have said.
“It is a simple thing, people go about and say, oh! he got votes in Lagos because of the Igbo, and I ask how many Igbos live in Lagos? I got more votes from indigenes in Lagos than those who you can call visitors.
“Are the Igbo in Nasarawa, are the Igbo in Plateau, are the Igbo in Abuja? In Rivers, where you know that the governor came out against me and everything, I still… If the real votes of Rivers were counted, Reuben, I won. I had over 50 something per cent of the vote.
“The other two parties were sharing the others.”
In Rivers, the President-elect, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress won by polling a total of 231,591 votes from the 23 Local Government Areas of the state, while the Labour Party polled 175,071 votes and the Peoples Democratic Party, 88,468 votes.
The APC won 14 LGAs, the Labour Party, five, while the PDP won four.
