Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has announced a five-day mourning period for President Ebrahim Raisi who died in a helicopter crash on Sunday, May 19, 2024.
“I announce five days of public mourning and offer my condolences to the dear people of Iran,” said Khamenei in an official statement a day after the death of Raisi and other officials in the crash in East Azerbaijan province.
Raisi and his foreign minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in East Azerbaijan province, as confirmed by an Iranian official on Monday via the Iran Mehr news agency.
The final flight of President Raisi was on May 19, 2024, in Iran. He was president from 2021 to 2024.
The helicopter carrying President Raisi and his delegation encountered severe weather conditions, leading to a crash landing. The incident took place as the president was returning from the inauguration of a dam on the Aras river with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
