One year after his coronation, King Charles III of the United Kingdom reflects on a challenging year, marked by health struggles and strained relations with his son, Prince Harry.
Diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, the king resumed public duties last week, visiting cancer patients at a London hospital, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his royal responsibilities.
“The past year has presented the king with some great personal challenges,” remarked the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, who conducted King Charles’ coronation. “But I have been struck by his continued sense of duty, having recently returned to royal engagements following treatment.”
Gun salutes across central London and the UK marked the anniversary, although no official events were scheduled due to the king’s health concerns.
Despite recent health setbacks, King Charles’ personal popularity has slightly increased to 56%, according to a recent poll. However, Prince William and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, remain the most popular members of the royal family, each with a rating of 69%.
The royal family has faced a turbulent year, with both King Charles and Catherine, aged 42, announcing their battles with cancer. This has led to Queen Camilla, aged 76, taking on many of her husband’s duties.
Nevertheless, the royal family continues to fulfill their duties, with Prince William and Catherine expected to take on more prominent roles in the near future.
In other news, Prince Harry, who moved to North America in 2020, is returning to the UK this week to attend a ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of his Invictus Games for disabled military veterans, possibly reuniting with his father, King Charles.
Meanwhile, in Trafalgar Square, around 100 demonstrators organized by the anti-monarchy group Republic gathered on Sunday, calling for the abolition of the monarchy.
