The Labour Party Diaspora Directorate has issued a statement disassociating the party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from the planned “EndBadGovernance” protest.
The statement, signed by the Deputy Director (Diaspora), Head Media and Communications Directorate of Mobilization and Integration, Amb. AJU Elumelu, described reports linking the party and Obi to the protest as baseless.
The Labour Party emphasized its commitment to peace and lawful conduct, citing its record of promoting peaceful and constructive engagement in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Elumelu stated, “The Labour Party and Peter Obi have consistently championed peace and lawful conduct. Our record, especially in the aftermath of the last general election, speaks volumes about our commitment to peaceful and constructive engagement in Nigeria’s political landscape.”
The party acknowledged the constitutional right to protest but clarified that any peaceful protest is an independent exercise of citizens’ democratic rights, not orchestrated or controlled by the Labour Party or any opposition party.
Elumelu noted, “While we acknowledge and respect the constitutional right of the Nigerian people to protest, it is essential to clarify that any peaceful protest initiated by citizens is an independent exercise of their democratic rights and is not orchestrated or controlled by the Labour Party or any opposition party.”
The Labour Party condemned attempts to falsely attribute the protest to the party and Obi, calling such statements “misleading” and “dangerous.” Elumelu urged the government to exercise restraint and responsibility in public communications, promoting constructive dialogue and positive policy changes to address Nigeria’s challenges.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to contributing to Nigeria’s progress through constructive opposition and sound policies, calling on Nigerians to remain peaceful and focused on collective efforts to build a better nation.
