Labour Party has reacted to its 2023 presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, on his threat to dump the party if the internal crisis are not resolved before next general election.
The party cleared the air that LP has been in existence, adding that “Obi just joined us but that doesn’t mean anything.”
This was made known by the National Vice Chairman (South East), Ceejay Igara, while fielding questions from the press.
He acknowledged that Obi has brought much value to the party, insisting that “a particular political party is sold with a candidate.”
Igara explained that the former Anambra State governor is not a sole proprietor of the party, maintaining that the party is no longer a “briefcase,” according to Independent.
He reiterated that LP has resolved to abide by the constitution with the view to building the party.
He said, “The Labour Party has been here before now. Peter Obi just joined us but that doesn’t mean anything because he brought a lot of value to the party, that I will admit.
“Remember that always, a particular political party is sold with a candidate and we have to admit that Peter Obi contributed vigorously to the image of the party now. But mind you he is not a sole proprietor because the Labour Party or any other party is supreme.
” If there is anything we need to do, we need to get it done and it must be a collective decision. One thing we need to get corrected here is that the party is supreme. We’re no longer a briefcase party and if there is anything that should be done, we must do it in line with the constitution of the party.
“We have decided strongly as a party that in all that we do, we must uphold the provisions of our constitution in order to build this party. It is only when this is done that the Labour Party will stand firm.”
