The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has stepped down from her position amid the ongoing leadership crisis rocking the state legislature.
Her resignation, however, has not resolved the crisis, as the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa continues to divide the Assembly and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in the state.
Announcing her resignation, Meranda stated that her decision was to protect the integrity of the House, stressing that she was not stepping down out of weakness.
“I take a bow as your Speaker,” she declared.
Before her announcement, several lawmakers took turns to commend her leadership, legislative acumen, and dedication during her brief tenure.
Desmond Olusola Elliot, a member of the House, praised her for demonstrating strong leadership.
“You demonstrated good leadership and led the House well,” Elliot said.
Another lawmaker, Temitope Adewale Ifako-Ijaiye I, lauded her contributions, describing her as a heroine of democracy.
“We celebrate you for your quality service. You are a heroine of democracy. You came, you saw, you conquered. You are a victim of circumstance. This House is in tears,” he said.
The political turmoil within the Lagos Assembly follows weeks of intense maneuvering and interventions by party leaders. Despite Meranda’s resignation, the path forward for the House remains uncertain.
