The Nigerian Senate has unanimously passed a vote of confidence in its President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, reaffirming its support for his leadership amidst ongoing controversies.
The motion, moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) and seconded by Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi (Osun West), was adopted during plenary on Thursday.
The resolution came just 48 hours after the suspended Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central), made allegations against Akpabio at the Inter-Parliamentary Union in New York.
Senator Natasha had told the IPU that her six-month suspension from the Senate without pay was a result of her raising allegations of sexual harassment against Akpabio. Her claims sparked fresh debates on gender equity and legislative accountability.
Following her suspension, she filed contempt charges against Akpabio and others, challenging what she described as an unjust disciplinary action against her.
The Senate has urged Nigerians not to be distracted by Natasha’s allegations, stating that the matter is already before the court. Lawmakers cited Order 40 of the Senate’s standing rules, which prevents the legislative body from interfering in issues that are under judicial consideration.
“The Senate will not engage in matters currently before the courts,” a statement from the Red Chamber read, reinforcing its stance that due process must be followed.
The unfolding situation has deepened tensions within the Senate, with observers closely watching how the judiciary will address Natasha’s legal battle. Meanwhile, Akpabio, who continues to enjoy the backing of a majority of lawmakers, remains at the helm as Senate President, steering the legislative agenda.
