The Federal Government has announced a public holiday on Wednesday, June 12, to commemorate the 2024 Democracy Day celebration.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Interior, the holiday honours the country’s transition to democracy and the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election.
This is contained in a statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr Aishetu Ndayako, on Tuesday in Abuja.
Ndayako stated that the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulated Nigerians on the occasion.
The government urged Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s progress and reaffirm their commitment to democratic governance. President Bola Tinubu’s administration reiterated its dedication to implementing positive reforms to boost the economy and enhance security, according to Nigerian Tribune.
This declaration follows the directive by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 to celebrate Democracy Day on June 12 instead of May 29.
The move aimed to acknowledge the significance of the annulled 1993 presidential election and honour the winner, Chief Moshood Abiola, with the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic award.
