Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo on Tuesday, described Nigeria as a poor country.
Stating this while speaking during the 9th (7th Quadrennial) Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Anambra State wing, on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, Governor Soludo described the removal of subsidy by President Bola Tinubu, as a necessary step to be taken by any serious government.
According to the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the removal of the subsidy had the potential to re-engineer the nation’s economy.
However, he applauded President Tinubu, for his courage to end the fuel subsidy, which has continued to drag the economy of the nation, for quite a long.
“It’s high time the country woke up to the reality that it is a poor country and began to live within its means.
“Starting from those in leadership, there was a need to begin to live and demonstrate to the people that Nigeria is a poor country.
“The reality of the subsidy removal affected everybody, not just civil servants.
“The present administration’s plan to cushion the effects was all-encompassing, including immediate and medium-term efforts.”
The governor, however, expressed plans by his government, to recruit more teachers, while continuing to give accessible and quality education to the citizenry.
