The spokesman for the Nigeria Labour Congress, Benson Upah, has expressed concerns that fuel prices may skyrocket to N5,000 per litre.
In an interview with Weekend Trust, Upah criticized the recent fuel pump price hike, stating it contradicts the agreement between NLC and the President Bola Tinubu government.
Upah disputed the government’s claim of restoring fuel subsidies, questioning the justification for increasing the pump price from N650 to N1,500 or N2,000.
He warned that if prices continue to rise, Nigerians may eventually pay N5,000 per litre, urging citizens to be prepared for such a scenario.
The NLC’s warning highlights the ongoing debate over fuel pricing and subsidies in Nigeria, with labour unions and citizens calling for affordable fuel prices and transparency in government policies.
He said: “Subsidy was never restored at any point in time as they claimed.
“So, what will inform moving the pump price of PMS from N650 to N1,500 or N2,000?
“I want to tell you something, what this signals is that Nigerians have not seen the end yet, we may end up paying nothing less than N5,000 per liter for fuel in this country. We hope not to get there but if we get there, the decision will be left to Nigerians.”
