The League of Northern Democrats, led by former Kano State Governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has announced plans to form a transformative coalition with other prominent northern organisations.
The coalition aims to restore Northern Nigeria as a beacon of progress, culture, and leadership within the nation.
In a meeting with the Arewa Consultative Forum on Thursday in Kaduna, LND representatives outlined their vision for a unified North. Senator Shekarau, represented by former minister Ibrahim Isa Bio, highlighted the importance of collaboration with groups such as the ACF, Northern Elders Forum, and Middle Belt Forum to address the region’s challenges.
Senator Shekarau described the coalition as a practical step toward reclaiming the North’s influence in Nigerian politics and society.
He said, “In our effort to rebuild a stronger Northern Nigeria, I am pleased to inform you that we have also held consultative meetings with the leaderships of the Northern Elders Forum and the Middle Belt Forum. Our discussions yielded agreements in principle to forge a coalition among our four organisations—ACF, LND, NEF, and the Middle Belt Forum. This coalition is not just for today but for the future—a future where Northern Nigeria regains its status as a beacon of progress, culture, and leadership in Nigeria!”
He added, “The consequence of such a coalition will be profound: political entities such as the PDP, APC, LP, NNPP, SDP, state governors, legislators, and even the presidency will be humbled and compelled to support and align with our vision, thus reclaiming the dignity, stability, and influence of Northern Nigeria for the benefit of all Nigerians.”
The coalition is focused on tackling issues such as poverty, insecurity, illiteracy, religious intolerance, disunity, and declining political influence. Shekarau emphasised the need for commitment, collaboration, and a shared vision to reverse the region’s fortunes.
He said, “The challenges facing our region are serious. Yet, we all know that the situation is reversible. It only requires commitment, collaboration, and a shared vision from all of us. We owe ourselves and the generations behind us the solemn duty to act.”
Shekarau also praised the ACF’s contributions to preserving the North’s values and culture, stating that the LND brings fresh perspectives and strategies to advance the region’s interests.
The proposed coalition aims to amplify the North’s voice, pool resources, and strengthen its political and economic fabric. Shekarau highlighted the importance of unity in addressing shared challenges and enhancing the region’s role in Nigeria’s political landscape.
He said, “This coalition is more than symbolic; it is a practical step towards building a cohesive North that can reclaim its rightful position as a zone of first influence in Nigeria’s politics and power dynamics. LND’s practical understanding of power dynamics, its aim to reposition the North, and its focus on innovative strategies will complement the established influence of ACF, NEF, and the Middle Belt Forum.”
Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu, Chairman of the ACF Board of Trustees, welcomed the LND’s leadership and lauded the coalition’s formation as a step in the right direction.
He said, “The coming together of the LND, ACF, NEF, and the Middle Belt Forum is additional strength for the pan-northern organisation. ‘Two heads,’ they say, ‘are better than one.’ I have already noticed the high intellectual level of the League of Northern Democrats. With such intellectual capacity, we are on course.”
Dalhatu commended the LND for its rapid progress since its establishment, adding, “We feel very proud that the North, no matter how many times you split it, still retains its essence and vision. The ACF is stronger because we are welcoming another source of strength, vision, and drive.”
In his concluding remarks, Senator Shekarau urged all stakeholders to approach the coalition with sincerity, purpose, and unwavering commitment.
He said, “Together, we have the power to rewrite the narrative of our region and secure a legacy of prosperity and unity for generations to come. May our deliberations today mark the beginning of a fruitful and enduring partnership.”
The coalition’s formation signals a renewed effort to address the challenges facing Northern Nigeria while fostering unity and development across the region.
