Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has shed more light on the hurdles he is facing on the governorship race.
Shaibu who is aspiring under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party said that there are plans to impeach him from the governorship race.
He raised an alarm over what he described as an intensified scheme to remove him from office.
According to Politics Nigeria, Shaibu insisted that the plot gained momentum following his emergence as the factional candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the upcoming governorship election in the state.
The controversy surrounding the PDP governorship primary in Edo State began when the returning officer, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, announced Asue Ighodalo as the winner with 577 votes.
However, a parallel primary held at the Benin residence of the Deputy Governor had a different outcome, with the returning officer, Bartholomew Moses, declaring Shaibu the winner, claiming he secured victory “with over 300 votes.”
During a press conference in Abuja, Shaibu expressed concern over the political manoeuvres, alleging that he has received threats of impeachment due to his insistence on contesting the election.
He stated, “Even as we speak, my team has been calling me that, ‘Look at what these people are doing. They are saying they are going to impeach you; that you have gotten too far.’ They are threatening to impeach me.”
Shaibu emphasized that his decision to contest the election is within his constitutional rights and cannot be infringed upon.
He maintained that any attempt to impeach him for exercising his constitutional rights would be subject to legal interpretation, and the courts would have the final say.
