World Trade Organization Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has firmly denied allegations that she facilitated a $57.5 billion loan for the Biafra Republic Government in Exile.
The accusation, made by separatist leader Simon Ekpa on October 23, 2024, claimed that the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund had agreed to the loan with her involvement.
Ekpa, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), alleged that the funds were meant to support the formation of a new government following a planned declaration of Biafran independence on December 2, 2024.
He stated, “The World Bank and IMF have agreed to loan the sum of $57.5 billion to Biafra Republic Government in Exile to form our government after December 2nd 2024 declaration of Biafra. I thank our sister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for helping me to facilitate the loan.”
Okonjo-Iweala swiftly refuted the claims, describing them as “outrageous” and completely unfounded. She highlighted the importance of countering misinformation, particularly in these tense times.
“I know no sensible person will believe what is contained in the outrageous tweet below, but in these troubled times, it is important to underscore that the statement is false,” she said.
The WTO chief also urged those misusing her name to stop, stating, “Again, I enjoin all those seeking to misuse my name to desist.”
The accusation comes amid heightened tensions surrounding separatist movements in Nigeria, with Ekpa’s controversial statements and actions drawing increasing attention both locally and internationally.
Okonjo-Iweala’s response underscores her commitment to clearing her name from any false association with these activities.
