With the Ondo State governorship election approaching, incumbent Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the All Progressives Congress candidate, has pledged to lead with “the fear of God” if re-elected.
Addressing Christian leaders at St. David’s Anglican Cathedral in Akure on Monday, Aiyedatiwa reaffirmed his commitment to Christian values and requested their prayers for guidance.
“I am one of you, a born-again Christian, and I understand the spiritual responsibilities that come with leadership,” he said. “The Ondo State government is anchored on the body of Christ, and as such, we cannot afford to fail. I earnestly ask that you continue to pray for us, for wisdom in governance and for the upcoming elections to be peaceful and just.”
The chairman of the state’s Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Anselm Ologunwa, commended Aiyedatiwa for his attention to issues impacting the Christian community.
“We appreciate your dedication to our concerns and your promptness in addressing matters that affect the body of Christ,” Ologunwa noted, reiterating CAN’s non-partisan stance. “Our duty is to promote the teachings of Jesus Christ, regardless of political affiliations.”
Ologunwa also announced a three-day prayer event beginning on November 10, focused on peace and stability in the state during the election period.
“We are praying for divine guidance and the peace of Ondo State. We trust that God will intervene,” he said.
In addition to support from Christian leaders, Aiyedatiwa has also received backing from the Ondo State chapter of the Trade Union Congress.
TUC Chairman Clement Fatuase praised the governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare, highlighting Aiyedatiwa’s approval of a N73,000 minimum wage and the sponsorship of over 100 workers to a regional labor summit.
“The governor was rated excellent, compelling the congress to support his dedication to workers’ welfare,” Fatuase explained.
Expressing gratitude for the TUC’s endorsement, Aiyedatiwa highlighted the positive relationship between his administration and the union. He emphasized that timely payment of salaries is a right, not a privilege, and promised continued support for civil servant training to enhance public service delivery.
With the Ondo State governorship election scheduled for November 16, Aiyedatiwa has laid out his vision for a faith-guided administration focused on peace, community welfare, and workers’ rights.
