The Correctional Officers Pencom Retirees Association of Nigeria has petitioned President Bola Tinubu, alleging that the Contributory Pension Commission scheme is worsening their plight.
In the petition, the pensioners claim they have been starved of their funds by PenCom after retirement, according to Politics Nigeria.
They argue that the policy, although well-intentioned, has caused more harm than good to Nigeria’s senior citizens.
The retirees are calling for a review of the policy to achieve better results for pensioners, citing the country’s high inflation rate and the need for fairness in payment of retirees’ benefits.
The petition, signed by Anthony Ayiwulu, COPRAN’s Plateau Command president, was also copied to the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Minister of Labour, and National Human Rights Commission, among others.
The pensioners are seeking prompt payment of their benefits to help them cope with retirement and rising living costs.
“In the current situation of the country with the rate of inflation, retirees have a lot of bills to pick including taking care of their health.
“There should exist a spirit of fairness in the nation’s dealings with its citizens and in the payment of civil, public servants and retirees promptly, would help them cope with retirement,” Ayiwulu said.
