The Plateau State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Oliver Agundu, on Tuesday, visited the State Police Commissioner, Okoro J. Alawari, as part of efforts to provide adequate security before, during and after the coming bye-elections in the state.
The bye-election is as scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission for February 3, 2024.
The elections in the state are for Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency and the Plateau North Senatorial position following the nullification of the elections of the member representing the constituency in the House of Representatives, Musa Agah and Senator, representing Plateau North Senatorial District, Simon Mwadkwon.
The REC in company of the management team highlighted some security concerns, including potential threats to the electoral process, possible acts of violence, and the need for effective security measures, before, during and after the election.
Responding, the police commissioner assured the INEC team of the command’s commitment in ensuring a safe and secure electoral process.
The police commissioner however emphasised the importance of maintaining law and order during the elections, stating that the police would do everything possible to ensure a hitch-free exercise, even as he called on residents of the state to remain calm, and law-abiding.
