The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday following a brief illness.
Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, was 59 years old. Born on December 2, 1965, she was a prominent lawmaker known for her dedication to public service and advocacy for her constituents.
Confirming her passing, the Spokesman for the House of Representatives, Rep. Akin Rotimi, described Onanuga as “a dedicated public servant, a visionary leader, and a passionate advocate for her constituents.”
In an official statement, Rotimi said, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, the Government and People of Ogun State – particularly the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency – and the entire membership of the National Assembly.
“As we mourn the loss of this vibrant and committed lawmaker, whose life was devoted to improving the lives of Nigerians – especially her constituents – her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.”
Onanuga was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 under the banner of the All Progressives Congress. During her first tenure, she served as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly, where she championed initiatives aimed at empowering women and advancing social welfare.
Re-elected in 2023, Onanuga was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly. She earned widespread respect for her exceptional leadership and commitment to maintaining legislative discipline during parliamentary sessions.
“Affectionately known as ‘Ijaya,’ Rep. Onanuga’s intellect, passion, humility, and drive for excellence earned her admiration among her colleagues and constituents alike,” Rotimi added.
“Her impactful contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape reflected her passion for creating a better society and her tireless dedication to public service.”
The late lawmaker’s passing is a significant loss to the National Assembly, Ogun State, and Nigeria as a whole. Her colleagues, constituents, and fellow Nigerians will remember her as a trailblazer whose life was dedicated to improving the welfare of others.
