The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has called for a review of the salary paid to workers in the country.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that this was said by Abbas in a statement made on Monday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi.
According to him, it is crucial to consider the compensation that the typical worker would require in light of the current financial situation.
In order to avoid having to look outside of his legal income, he claimed that it was necessary to develop a living wage that would cover a person’s essential needs.
Abbas urged the government to learn from the Western world’s and the UK’s experiments, stating that “basically, what they did was to sit down and look at what an ordinary worker will need to be given as salary.
“Today, a laborer in London will make enough money to go and pay their rent, take care of their basic needs, and yet be able to live rather well.
“You don’t need to go and borrow money, beg for money, or steal money if you have that kind of incentive.”
According to him, the ordinary worker in Nigeria makes less money than what it would take to fill up a car with fuel.
He noted that in order to fight corruption, we must foster a climate that allows every one of us to conduct business honestly.
“We can embark on the measures required to fight corruption if we can establish the rule of law.
He added that in order to combat corruption, “we need to create an environment that makes it possible for the average worker to earn enough money to support his family.”
