Supporters and members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State have staged a street protest against the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024.
The protesters gathered at the party secretariat before marching through the streets with placards, expressing dissent. This faction is believed to be loyal to Chief Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, according to Leadership.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara had earlier declared October 3 and 4 as public holidays to facilitate residents’ participation in the elections.
A strict restriction on vehicular movement is also in place from midnight on October 4 to 5 pm on Election Day.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has criticized Governor Fubara’s administration for proceeding with the elections, alleging a drift into lawlessness.
APC caretaker committee chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, expressed concerns about the governor’s actions, citing the need to prevent anarchy.
Okocha questioned the legitimacy of the October 5 elections, highlighting the party’s commitment to upholding order.
The protest and APC’s criticism come amidst ongoing tensions surrounding the local government elections. The political landscape in Rivers State remains complex, with factions vying for control.
Okocha said: “We are watching Rivers State drift into a state of lawlessness due to fragrant impunity of one man. The governor had ruled and had continued to rule this state with impunity. We can’t stand and watch him rule the state into oblivion. We need to let the President and National Assembly members to know our plight.
“Instead of appealing against the judgement of Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, they are busy procuring more court rulings and orders . They have not even appealed against the Omotosho judgement.”
