The Senate has announced the appointment of two new principal officers to fill the vacant positions of Deputy Leader and Deputy Chief Whip.
The new appointees are Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru (APC – Kwara South) and Senator Nwebonyi Peter Onyeka (APC – Ebonyi North) respectively.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcement at plenary on Wednesday, October 18, 2023. He congratulated the new officers and urged them to work for the unity and progress of the Senate and the nation.
Senator Ashiru, who was previously the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, was elevated to Deputy Senate Leader, which became vacant following the appointment of Senator Dave Umahi as Minister of Works by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Senator Ashiru is a seasoned politician and businessman, who has been representing Kwara South Senatorial District since 2019. He is also the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing and the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Procurement.
Senator Onyeka, who was elected to represent Ebonyi North Senatorial District in 2023, is the new Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate. He is a lawyer and a former member of the House of Representatives. He is also a member of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters and the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.
The new appointments are expected to strengthen the leadership of the Senate and enhance its legislative functions.
