The Senate has confirmed Nnanna Uzor-Kalu as a member of the National Assembly Service Commission, marking him as the second nominee from the South-East to receive approval.
Uzor-Kalu, a former two-term member of the House of Representatives and younger brother of former Abia State Governor, Senator Orji Uzor-Kalu, initially faced a delay in his confirmation due to a petition against him.
However, after a thorough review and a report by the Senate Ethics Committee recommending his appointment, the upper chamber granted its approval on Thursday.
During the plenary session, Senator Cyril Fasuyi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, presented the list of confirmed nominees.
Those who received approval include Dr. Saviour Enyiekere (South-South), Suleiman Hunkuyi (North-West), Yusuf Yusuf (North-West), Aminu Malle (North-East), and Alhaji Mahmud (North-East). Others on the list are Mark Terso (North-Central), Salihu Balogun (North-Central), Taiwo Oluga (South-West), Afeez Ipesa-Balogun (South-West), Festus Odii (South-East), Patrick Giwa (South-South), and Mrs. Mary Ekpeyong (South-South).
Presenting the committee’s findings, Fasuyi reassured the Senate that all confirmed nominees had met the required qualifications, possessed the necessary experience, and had maintained reputable backgrounds.
Addressing the delay regarding the South-East nominee, Fasuyi clarified that the Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions Committee had thoroughly reviewed the petition against Uzor-Kalu and, after careful consideration, recommended his confirmation.
He stated, “All confirmed nominees have fulfilled the qualifications and possess the requisite experience, with no records of misconduct. The committee has diligently reviewed all concerns, including the petition against the South-East nominee, and found no impediment to his appointment.”
With the Senate’s approval, Uzor-Kalu and the other confirmed nominees are expected to commence their roles in the National Assembly Service Commission, contributing to legislative administration and service delivery.
