Despite efforts by the Federal Government to restructure the public service in accordance with the Steve Oronsaye Committee Report on Restructuring and Rationalization of Federal Government Parastatals, Agencies, and Commission, the Senate has proposed the establishment of 376 new agencies and institutions.
In order to lower the cost of government, the research suggested that several ministries, departments, and agencies be eliminated or merged.
In August, the Federal Government established a white paper committee to review the parastatals, agencies, and commissions established since 2014. The committee submitted a draft report.
The Federal Government also established sub-committees on the implementation of the Oronsaye Report in November last year, led by former federation heads of service Bukar Aji, Ama Pepple, and Oladapo Afolabi, while the Ebele Okeke Committee was to draft a White Paper on the Ama Pepple Committee Report and harmonise the other committee reports.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, stated that the Federal Government would soon complete the reform of the public service.
Findings by The PUNCH indicated that the 9th Senate has passed a total of 1,070 bills, including 376 establishment bills for the creation of various institutions and agencies in spite of the economic challenges facing the country.
Some of these establishing legislation have been passed, while others have progressed to committee levels in contravention of the Oronsaye report’s recommendations.
