The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has shed light on the collaborative efforts of federal lawmakers from the South-West states in passing the Bill for the establishment of the South West Development Commission.
Speaking at the 2024 South-west Assembly of the All Progressives Congress held at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos, Bamidele revealed that lawmakers from the South-west APC have been instrumental in promoting progress and stability within the National Assembly.
Bamidele explained that the South-West Caucus worked tirelessly with lawmakers from other geo-political zones to secure majority support for the passage of the South West Development Commission Bill, 2024, at the upper chamber.
He emphasized that the success of this bill is a testament to the power of unity, saying, “We are now awaiting concurrence from the House of Representatives before transmitting it to the President for assent. We recognise that our success is not limited to members of the APC alone. Our colleagues from other political parties have been just as committed to the success of our region.”
Bamidele stressed the importance of collaboration, stating, “This bill, and many others, reminds us that when it comes to the development of our people, there is no room for division. We must continue to work together to achieve more.”
He also highlighted the South-West Caucus’s role in supporting the National Assembly’s leadership, particularly during times of turmoil, “We have stood firmly with the leadership of the National Assembly, especially when plots were being hatched to bring the leadership to disrepute.”
Bamidele proudly noted the significant representation of the South-West zone in the Senate’s leadership, including his own position as Senate Leader and other high-ranking positions in the House of Representatives.
He said, “The South West Caucus remains a stabilising force in the Senate. Our zone has also received fair recognition in the leadership of the Senate.”
Furthermore, Bamidele emphasized the caucus’s commitment to supporting President Bola Tinubu’s transformative policies, demonstrating their collective desire for swift implementation.
He added, “We gave expeditious attention to the screening of the President’s nominees for various political positions… We will continue to support his reforms as he steers the country towards prosperity and stability.”
