The Congress for Rights Of Yoruba Nationalities has told former President Olusegun Obasanjo to stop sabotaging the wishes, aspirations, and development of Yoruba people, adding that his attitude and character since the days of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo had been frustrating the collective goal and legitimate desires of the Yorubaland.
In a statement by its Chairman, Abiodun Fanoro, and the General Secretary, Tunde Aiyenumelo, the group criticized Obasanjo’s stance on presidential election in which a Yoruba son, Bola Ahmed Tinubu was declared winner by the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, having fulfilled all electoral requirements but the former president called for cancellation of the outcome and rerun elections.
Guardian reports that, the group said that it was ironical and unfortunate that Obasanjo, who 30 years ago, played a conspiratorial role in the subversion of a similar mandate by a Yoruba son, the late Chief M. K. O Abiola.
“CROYN advises Obasanjo to end his un-provoked aggressions against Tinubu, dated back to when Tinubu was Lagos State governor. Yoruba people without hindrance have accorded Obasanjo his human and democratic right of choice of candidate and voting for his choice.
Therefore, as a self-respected person, he should allow Yoruba people to choose their own candidate and the sanctity of that choice as endorsed by the majority of voters.”
It admonished the former military head of state to copy the actions of self-respected former leaders such as Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalam Abubakar, and Good-luck Jonathan who after leaving office have continued to play the role of true statesmen and genuine patriots as ambassadors for peace, unity, and security, distancing themselves from partisanship.
