President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday conferred the national honor of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Nigeria-India Bilateral Meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Speaking at the event, President Tinubu stated that the honor was a symbol of Nigeria’s appreciation and commitment to its partnership with India. He noted that the invitation to Prime Minister Modi was aimed at rejuvenating and reclassifying the longstanding relationship between both nations.
“Nigeria values its excellent relationship with India, and we work to deepen and broaden the same to the mutual benefit of our two friendly countries,” Tinubu said.
He lauded Modi’s achievements in governance and democracy. “You represent a very strong commitment to democratic values and norms. You have been doing a good job historically, winning three consecutive elections in a complex society is a feat that we respect so much.
“I will confer on you today, the Prime Minister of India, Nigeria’s National Honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger. This is to signify Nigerian appreciation and commitment to India as a partner,” Tinubu added.
In response, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for the recognition and extended his condolences to Nigeria over the devastating floods that recently ravaged several cities, including Maiduguri.
To support Nigeria’s ongoing humanitarian efforts, Modi announced a donation of 20 tons of relief materials to assist the affected communities.
The bilateral meeting underscored the mutual respect and collaboration between Nigeria and India, setting the stage for deeper ties and cooperation.
