President Bola Tinubu has congratulated former President Goodluck Jonathan on being named the recipient of the 2025 Sunhak Peace Founders’ Award.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu praised Jonathan for his unwavering commitment to promoting peace and democracy.
The statement read, “The President states that Dr Jonathan’s winning the Sunhak Peace Award affirms his bold efforts in peacebuilding and promoting democracy in Africa and beyond.”
Tinubu also recalled Jonathan’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic development, highlighting his historic decision to accept the results of the 2015 presidential election and peacefully hand over power to an opposition party. This move, the President noted, significantly strengthened the nation’s democratic profile.
The statement further included Tinubu’s appreciation for the Sunhak Peace Prize Committee for recognizing individuals contributing to global peace and development.
The Sunhak Peace Prize, which was established in 2015, is awarded biennially to individuals and organizations for their exceptional contributions to global peace and development. The prize focuses on three main areas: sustainable human development, conflict resolution, and environmental conservation.
Jonathan is set to receive the 2025 Founders’ Sunhak Peace Award in Seoul, South Korea, in recognition of his ongoing peacebuilding initiatives across Africa. He served as Nigeria’s President from 2010 to 2015, and his peaceful concession of the 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari, the opposition flagbearer, has been widely praised as a crucial step in enhancing Nigeria’s democratic processes.
The Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation honors individuals who advance peace through humanitarian work, sustainable development, and conflict resolution.
