President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate’s approval to remove the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners of Sokoto, Adamawa, and Abia states.
The president’s request was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio. The affected Independent National Electoral Commission officials are Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), and Nura Ali (Sokoto), who were suspended over alleged misconduct during the 2023 general elections.
Reading the letter during Wednesday’s plenary session, Akpabio noted that President Tinubu clarified the RECs had already been suspended by INEC before he assumed office.
“The Senate is invited to note that the three resident electoral commissioners have been suspended for misconduct since March 2022 before the advent of the current administration.
“While I trust that the Senate will consider this request expeditiously, please accept distinguished senators and distinguished senate president, the assurances of my highest consideration,” the letter stated.
In a related development, President Tinubu has also written to the Senate seeking an increase in the 2025 budget from N49.7 trillion to N54.2 trillion.
Following the president’s request, Akpabio directed the matter to the Senate Committee on Finance and Appropriations for swift consideration.
