In a bold effort to tackle rising fuel costs and offer Nigerians an affordable alternative, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has introduced Compressed Natural Gas at a price of N230 per litre.
According to Vanguard, this initiative aims to provide a cost-effective and environmentally friendly substitute to petrol, which is currently priced above N900 per litre.
As part of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, the government is set to revolutionize fuel consumption in Nigeria by making CNG widely available. The initiative aligns with the administration’s goals of diversifying energy sources and reducing living costs, particularly for those reliant on transportation.
To facilitate a smooth transition for the transport sector, Tinubu has mandated the distribution of 1 million free CNG conversion kits to commercial vehicles. These kits, which come with complimentary installation, will be provided over the next 18 months.
The first phase of the PCNGi will commence with the distribution of 10,000 free conversion kits this week. These kits will be given at no cost to commercial vehicle operators through major national transport associations.
The distribution and conversion process will be overseen by PCNGi in collaboration with NIPCO Gas, which will manage the installation through a network of authorized conversion centers across the country.
By adopting CNG, Nigeria is moving towards a more sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly fuel option. The government’s objective is to complete the distribution of the full 1 million conversion kits by the end of 2025.
This initiative reflects President Tinubu’s vision for a more resilient and economically stable Nigeria, offering a practical solution to the high cost of fuel while promoting sustainable energy practices.
