Gabon’s interim Prime Minister, Raymond Ndong Sima, has stated that the two-year transition before the free elections promised by Gabon’s new military rulers is a “reasonable objective”.
According to The AFP, he stated this in an interview with journalists on Sunday.
“It’s good to set off with a reasonable objective by saying: we have the desire to see the process come to an end in 24 months so we can go back to elections,” said Raymond Ndong Sima, prime minister during the transition. That period could end up being slightly longer or shorter, he added.
Last week, Ndong Sima assumed the position of chairman of the transitional government, following his appointment by General Brice Oligui Nguema. General Nguema had spearheaded the August coup d’état against President Ali Bongo Ondimba.
The coup transpired on August 30, shortly after Bongo was officially announced as the victor of a presidential election that was denounced as fraudulent by both the military and the opposition.
