The British High Commission in Nigeria has called for calm following the announcement of the Edo State governorship election results.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the commission encouraged parties with grievances to utilize established legal channels to address their concerns.
The commission praised the largely peaceful conduct of the election but emphasized the importance of transparent and fair resolution of disputes, according to Daily Trust.
Recall that Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress was declared the winner with 291,667 votes, defeating the Peoples Democratic Party’s Asue Ighodalo, who garnered 247,274 votes.
The Peoples Democratic Party has vowed to challenge the outcome in court, citing manipulation of results and voter intimidation.
The British High Commission reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting fair and credible elections in Nigeria, stating that it will continue to monitor the situation in Edo.
“The UK calls for continued calm following the announcement of the result.
“Electoral and legal processes exist to address any challenges or disputes, and we encourage the authorities, including INEC, to examine all concerns transparently and in good faith.
“The UK remains committed to supporting fair and credible elections in Nigeria and will continue to follow the situation in Edo carefully,” it said.
