President Joe Biden has reaffirmed his commitment to running for re-election, despite calls from within his own party to step down following a debated performance in a televised debate with Republican opponent Donald Trump.
In a letter to congressional Democrats, Biden emphasized the need for unity and urged an end to “intraparty drama,” stressing that the focus should be on defeating Trump in the November election.
Biden’s letter comes as lawmakers return to Washington, where they will decide whether to support or potentially replace him on the Democratic ticket, according to Daily Post.
The President’s re-election campaign officials distributed the letter, which emphasizes the importance of unity and clarity in the face of the upcoming election.
With 42 days until the Democratic Convention and 119 days until the general election, Biden urged Democrats to come together and move forward as a unified party, warning that any division or uncertainty would only benefit Trump.
The President’s stance has sparked debate within the party, with some suggesting Vice President Kamala Harris as a potential replacement on the ticket.
However, Biden remains resolute in his determination to continue his reelection bid.
Against such proposition, President Biden, in a letter to congressional Democrats on Monday, stood firm on his candidacy, demanding an end to the “intraparty drama” that has torn Democrats apart since his widely discussed public debate.
“The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now; and it’s time for it to end,” Biden wrote in his letter.
Biden said in his letter, distributed by his reelection campaign officials: “We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election. Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It’s time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”
