Renowned Nigerian playwright and Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has launched a scathing attack on former United States President and Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, describing him as a “consummate liar” and a “menace” to the world.
In an interview with TheNEWS as part of activities marking his 90th birthday, Soyinka, when asked about his ideologies concerning the far right and extremists all over the world who are working hard to annihilate other people and how he relates all of that to the extremism in America right now, he expressed his strong disapproval of Trump’s character and actions, he asserted that Trump is not as clever as he thought he was.
He, however, said: “But he did one thing. He studied and he understood the American psyche. And he knew the right chord to tweak in order to get them on his side, to get them to believe anything that he says. I don’t think the world has ever known such a consummate liar like Donald Trump.”
Soyinka’s comments come as Trump is seeking a second term as US President, having previously served one term from 2017 to 2021. Recently, Trump survived an assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, but the shooter was killed.
Soyinka’s criticism of Trump is not new, as he has been a vocal opponent of the former President’s policies and actions. As a respected intellectual and public figure, Soyinka’s views carry significant weight, and his description of Trump as a “consummate liar” and “menace” is likely to resonate with many who share his concerns about Trump’s candidacy and presidency.
