The Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, led by Simon Ekpa, has announced that the United States government is expected to make favorable statements in support of Biafra’s independence in the near future.
In a statement released on Thursday, Ekpa highlighted recent high-level diplomatic engagements that have been pivotal in advancing the BRGIE’s cause for Biafran sovereignty. He reported that these developments were the result of a series of meetings held in early July 2024 involving BRGIE representatives, U.S. congressional officials, lobbyists, and prominent international journalists.
“In the week of July 8, 2024, the Prime Minister of Biafra, Ekpa Simon Njoku and members of the cabinet had a series of high-level meetings, arranged by BRGIE lobbyists, with prominent international journalists, senior U.S. Congressional officials, and senior Washington, DC think-tank leaders,” Ekpa stated.
According to Ekpa, these meetings led to significant outcomes, including U.S. officials expressing interest in issuing supportive statements regarding the BRGIE’s objectives and Biafra-related issues. “These discussions yielded important outcomes, such as interest by U.S. officials in issuing favorable statements regarding the BRGIE and Biafra-related matters over the coming months,” he claimed.
Ekpa characterized these developments as evidence of the effectiveness of his administration’s “multi-dimensional approach” to achieving Biafra’s independence. He framed the outcomes as a testament to the success of his strategic efforts and the importance of ongoing lobbying efforts.
The context of these claims comes amid a resurgence of the Biafra independence movement within Nigeria. Recently, there has been a renewed push for Biafra’s liberation and for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra. South-East governors and members of the National Assembly from the region have been vocal in advocating for Kanu’s freedom.
Despite these calls for Kanu’s release, the Federal Government of Nigeria has yet to issue a response to the demands for the IPOB leader’s freedom.
