The United States on Wednesday unveiled a $1.3 billion military assistance package for Ukraine, which includes air defence systems, anti-tank missiles, drones, and various other equipment.
The package is part of US efforts to meet “Ukraine’s pressing requirements by committing critical near-term capabilities while also building the enduring capacity of Ukraine’s armed forces,” the Defense Department said in a statement.
Due to the initiative’s classification as Ukraine Security Assistance, which requires Washington to acquire equipment from the defence industry or allies rather than drawing from US stocks, the aid will not be on the battlefield anytime soon.
Everything from four NASAMs air defence systems and ammunition to TOW anti-tank missiles, 152 mm artillery shells, drones and counter-drone systems, and a wide range of vehicles is included in the package.
After Russia’s invasion, the United States took the lead in rallying international support for Ukraine, immediately forming a coalition to assist Kyiv and arranging help from dozens of countries.
