A delegation from Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission, currently in the United States to observe the 2024 presidential election, paid a courtesy visit to the Nigerian Embassy in Atlanta, Georgia.
The INEC team, led by National Electoral Commissioner Mr. Sam Olumekun, included several key members such as INEC National Secretary Chief (Dr.) Rose Oriaran-Anthony, Deputy Director Mr. Okezie Nwankwo, former Youth Ambassador to INEC Professor Helen Paul, and Dr. Prince Ero Ibhafidon, President of the international NGO Waterlight Save Initiative Inc., an INEC partner.
Representatives of the Nigerian Embassy in Atlanta warmly received the delegation, commending INEC for its dedication to democratic development and commitment to learning from established democratic systems. Present at the meeting were Consul General Ambassador Auwalu Namadina Jega, Consul (Political and Economic) Mr. Mohammed Shehu, Consul (NIDO, Education & Culture) Mrs. Miriam C. Udeozo, Head of Chancery Mr. Abubakar Othman, Financial Attaché Mr. Kariya Sani Gambo, and Vice Consul (Immigration) Mrs. Stellamaris Eniolorunda.
The purpose of the visit was to discuss the importance of INEC’s mission in observing the U.S. election to adopt strategies that could improve Nigeria’s electoral processes in areas such as transparency, voter engagement, efficient logistics, and impartial vote counting.
INEC National Secretary Dr. Rose Oriaran-Anthony emphasized the role of such international partnerships in enhancing the professional development of INEC staff and strengthening Nigeria’s commitment to democratic integrity.
Dr. Prince Ero Ibhafidon noted that the partnership with INEC demonstrated a commitment to collaborative governance and shared learning in advancing free, fair, and credible elections.
